Official Anti-Hazing Policy

The act of hazing is an unacceptable practice during the Membership Intake Process. It is necessary for the Regional Directors to emphasize the policy of Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity in regard to hazing.

What is considered hazing? Delta Phi Upsilon accepts the dictionary definition:

To initiate or discipline fellow students by means of horseplay, practical jokes and tricks, often in the nature of humiliating or painful ordeals. To oppress, punish or harass by forcing to do hard and unnecessary work. A harassment by abusive or ridiculous treatment and/or language.

HAZING IN ANY FORM (mental or physical) is a violation of Fraternity rules. For Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity it will not be tolerated. The Constitution and Bylaws clearly state the penalty for such action by chapters or individuals. Hazing is against the law in all states of the United States and is generally defined as follows:

Physical
  • Hitting or pretending to hit a person.
  • Performing acts that are or seem to be dangerous.
  • Requiring consumption of undue amounts or odd preparation of food.
  • Requiring a person to engage in physical activity of unusual kind of duration, in particular:
    • Calisthenics
    • Difficult work assignments.
    • Activity that may be excessive for persons with physical disabilities.
    • Activities which require a person to remain in a fixed position for an extended period of time.
Mental
  • Any willful act directed against any individual for purpose of causing:
  • Humiliation
  • Intimidation
  • Social or other ostracism
  • Ignominy, shame or disgrace among his peers
or any act that:
  • Humbles the candidate’s pride
  • Stifles ambition
  • Blights courage
The Membership Intake Process of Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. and the Ritual outline required activities. Our governing documents contain absolute prohibitions against hazing related activities before, during and after the Member Education Program and provide for specific sanctions against members and chapters for violations of these prohibitions. The Bylaws of the fraternity specifically state that:

All acts of hazing and harassment shall be expressly prohibited. No man shall be subject to any act of hazing or harassment in connection with or during his initiation into membership in the Fraternity. The Fraternity does not consent to, condone, acquiesce in or tolerate any act of hazing, harassment or humiliation in the Member Education Program, nor will the Fraternity be responsible or liable for any damages, claims or actions based upon the conduct of any individuals, groups or associations purporting to perform any acts in the name of the Fraternity or purported to be in any way connected with initiation into membership in the Fraternity. The Risk Management Policy adopted by the Executive Council shall be considered as part of these Bylaws. Said policy shall be printed and distributed to all chapters, members and to others within the fraternity as deemed necessary. The Risk Management Policy shall be reviewed at least annually by the Executive Director and the Executive Council to keep it current with legal and policy changes. Punishment for violation of the fraternity’s Risk Management Policy may include: probation, suspension or revocation of chapter charter; probation, suspension or expulsion of the individual(s) involved; removal from office of those officers of the chapter involved and the denial of membership to candidates who allow themselves to be involved in any of the aforementioned.
